Jacques Hammer

Jacques Hammer is an educational side scroller beat em-up game where the player progresses through different stages, smashing incorrect translation signs then defeating enemies and bosses. Purchase new outfits & hammers to increase your damage multiplier and smash incorrect translation signs to increase you damage per tap.

Being the only games developer in the team made me responsible for most aspects of game development, apart from art production and back end server side programming for the educational part of the game.

Highlighted features I created: 
  • Implemented art assets to create 12 worlds (with different times of day) for the player to traverse through, each with enemy 4 fights and a boss fight.
  • Created tutorial with the pup directing the player on how to fight a boss.
  • Each area uses parallax scrolling to add depth to the game, allowing speeding up and slowing down of jacque to simulate movement.
  • Designed and implemented inventory system for the player to purchase outfits and items that will increase the DPT (damage per tap) modifier, allowing more damage in boss fights.
  • Implementation of companion in form of pup, first seen in the tutorial, then at level 10 where he joins Jacque.
  • Developed upgradable abilities for the pup; Basic attack (damage per attack), bite back (how many times pup attacks), coin collector (gain % more gold), math wizard (calculates how many signs are needed to beat boss), take the wheel (game will auto play and take player to boss if strong enough).
  • Implementation of swipe detection for gameplay. Swipe down or tap on a sign to smash it (think it's incorrect), swipe horizontally to pass it (think its correct).
  • Created boss fights where players damage is calculated by number of signs correctly answered x (DPT (damage per tap from different outfits and hammers) x player taps on screen. If total damage is over double boss health then it triggers epic victory.
  • Player collects coins from answering signs correctly and from chests after winning boss fights.
  • Integration of MeminiSDK and methods to enable language learning. This included addition of a 'revision list' page showing users the words they need to learn.
